    History of Birstonas

For the first time, the city of Birštonas was mentioned in the military chronicle, authored by Wigandas of Marburg. According to his records, in 1382, as part of the offensive against Lithuania, part of the troops of Marshal Kun von Hatenstein was sent to Birstonas. Later, in the archives of Königsberg, historians found almost two dozen reports of the Crusader reconnaissance period 1384-1402, mentioning the estate near the "salt water" under the name of Biršten or Birštan. The Battle of Grunwald in 1411 ended the crusader raids and for some time Birštonas fell out of sight of historians. There is evidence that in the vicinity of Birstonas, monarchs of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania liked to hunt, especially Vitovt and Casimir IV with children.

Comprehensive development and prosperity of the resort began in 1846, when mineral water was used to treat the stomach and nerves. Dr. Benediktas Bilinskis was the first to discover the healing properties of water, engaged in research and contributed to the official assignment of the status of a resort city to Birstonas. This significant event dates back to 1854, the first hospital was opened in 1855, and by the beginning and mid-60s of the XIX century the resort's fame spread to all corners of the vast Russian empire. By 1914, there were 3 health resorts equipped with 72 baths, and at the same time more than 200 people could be treated at the resort.

The First World War caused great damage to the spa, destroying almost all the hotels and buildings, but in 1924, the Lithuanian Red Cross resorted to re-equipping and upgrading the spa: they installed water supply, sewage, electricity, street lighting, put mud baths, delivered healing mud from the Vyalnyablyudya peat bog, ennobled the park territory, installed a fountain and reservoirs of mineral water. Thanks to great luck, the Second World War passed Birštonas, leaving the entire infrastructure intact. After the war, the resort continued to be built and developed, becoming one of the best resorts in Lithuania.

    Attractions and entertainment in Birstonas

The main attraction of the small and cozy Birstonas is the Neman River and the forests surrounding the city. It is very pleasant that hiking and cycling trails are laid everywhere in the city and even in the forests, we especially recommend walking along the Škevonskaya (1.6 km) and Vyalnyabludzhsky (1.5 km) educational trails, and cycling along the вwierinci Forest Trail (15 km). Balloon flights and gliders provide a special pleasure, thanks to which you can take a bird's eye view of the picturesque valley of the Neman River. Even outdoor enthusiasts can visit the ski slopes on Mount Vytautas: two slopes 160 and 300 meters long, respectively, illuminated at night and equipped with a ski lift.

Almost every month, sports and cultural events are held in Birstonas:

Only in 1992 was the Nemunas Bend Regional Park opened with a total area of 25,000 ha.Dense pine forests occupy more than 2/3 of the park, there are 17 wildlife reserves, dozens of natural, historical and cultural heritage sites. Birštonas Museum of History

The museum was opened in 1967 by the efforts of local historians of the city’s high school. It was they who collected documents, photographs and various objects related to the history of Birstonas. At the moment, more than 8 thousand exhibits are collected, divided into three semantic groups. The first tells about the first settlements on the territory of modern Birštonas, medieval wars and heroes, the development of the resort until the middle of the XIX century. The second exhibition covers the period from the middle of the XIX century to 1959 and gives an idea of the years of the First and Second World Wars, illustrates the major flood of 1958 and other important historical events. Well, the third, last part of the collection will tell guests about the recent history of Birstonas, his becoming the leading balneological resort in Lithuania.

    How to get to Birstonas

The cities closest to Birštonas with the airport are Kaunas (40 km) and Vilnius (100 km). You can get to the hotel from there in various ways: by taxi, rented car, public transport or by ordering a transfer on our website. Everything is clear with a taxi: we got out of the terminal, saw a taxi, got in and went. Very fast and comfortable, but affordably hit the pocket.

In the event that your company has drivers and you plan to travel around the neighborhood, it makes sense to rent a car for the rest. The road from Vilnius to Birstonas takes about an hour and a half. It is most convenient to go along the A1 highway, leaving after Triliškės at the junction to the left, onto highway 1806, which in turn will run into the A16 highway, and it will already lead you to the final destination. An alternative is to immediately go onto the A16, that's how buses go. It takes about 40 minutes to go from Kaunas: first on highway 130, then turning off onto A16.

Public transport is represented by bus services in the region. From Vilnius, the bus runs for almost 2 hours, routes No. 274 and 366, which depart from the railway station, are suitable for you. Ticket price - 6-8 euros. It takes 40 minutes by bus from Kaunas, approximately, like by car, the ticket price is 3-4 euros. Buses depart from Kaunas bus station, route 366 is suitable for you. The route numbers are the same, since they are operated by one company - Kautra - and this was done for ease of remembering.
