The city was designed in 1863 by the French engineer Ferdinand de Lessep as a service base for the construction of the canal. The city received its name in honor of Ismail Pasha, who ruled Egypt. In the years 1921-1922. here was the Cossack Don Emperor Alexander III cadet corps. Three cadets and one teacher were buried at the local cemetery. During the Arab-Israeli conflict of 1967, the city was captured by the Israelis, most of the inhabitants were evacuated.
