Short description

Gandinagar is the capital of the most western Indian state of Gujarat, which is located on the banks of the Sabarmati River. The city was named after the spiritual and political leader of the country - Mahatma Gandhi. Gandinagar is divided into 30 administrative districts, and more than 200 thousand people live on its territory.

The city was founded recently - in 1960-1964, when the state of Bombay was divided into two separate parts - Gujarat and Maharashtra. Then the capital of the new state of Gujarat was Ahmedabad, but already in 1970 the functions of the administrative center were transferred to the young Gandinagar. Currently, the city is actively developing.

Due to its short history and rather small size (a little over 177 sq. Km), Gandinagar is not very popular among tourists. Nevertheless, there are several interesting places on its territory that are worth visiting. As, for example, the famous temple complex Akshardham, which was built only in 1992, but has already become a world-famous cultural center. On its basis, galleries, a museum and a research center were opened. And its main attraction is a two-meter gilded statue of the god Shvaminarayan.

In addition, in the city center there are a large number of shopping and entertainment centers, shops, cafes and restaurants, parks and sports grounds, where locals love to play cricket.

In Gandinagar, you can buy excellent wooden products (souvenirs, furniture, jewelry), decorated with skillful carvings, as well as beautiful and high-quality jewelry.

The best time to visit Gandinagar is the period from October to March, when the weather is warm, but not too hot, without precipitation.
